In late 2019, General Motors recalled almost 3.5 million Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks manufactured between 2014 and 2018 due to serious brake problems that could potentially lead to a crash. If you own a vehicle involved in this recall, it is important that you take it to a GM dealer so the problem can be fixed.
Problems were initially identified during an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). At the time it was identified, 113 crashes and 13 injuries had been attributed to faulty brakes.
One problem is that the braking systems’ power brake vacuum pumps lose pressure over time due to a buildup of dirt and debris. When this happens, the power braking system does not work properly.
A second problem, caused by a faulty wheel speed sensor, causes brakes to be operated on the wheel opposite of the sensor. This problem tends to occur when the vehicle is driven at speeds between 41 and 60 mph. The vehicle’s ABS or Stabilitrak warning light may be activated.
The following 4-wheel drive vehicles with 5.3-liter V8 engines and 3.08-ratio rear axles have been recalled for one or both issues:
- 2014 to 2018 GMC Sierra
- 2014 to 2018 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2015 to 2020 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2015 to 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2015 to 2020 GMC Yukon
- 2015 to 2017 Cadillac Escalade
