Infant sleeper poses suffocation risk to babies.
Thursday, January 23, 2020 – Sumr Brands, formerly Summer Infant, has been issued a stern warning by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to potential suffocation risks to babies who cannot yet hold their heads up. In addition, the CPSC is urging parents and care providers to stop using the product.
Sleeper “Puts Infants at Risk of Suffocation”
According to the CPSC warning, “Based on CPSC staff’s evaluation of the product, how it is used, and outside expert analysis, CPSC staff believes that the Summer Infant SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper puts infants at risk of suffocation. Although CPSC is not aware of any incidents or deaths involving the Summer Infant SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleeper, CPSC urges consumers to stop using the product immediately.”
The CPSC is attempting to reach an agreement with Sumr Brands to recall the sleeper, which has similar risks to Fisher-Price’s Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, recalled in April 2019. According to CPSC, the commission intends to continue pushing for a recall.
“The agency continues to emphasize that the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard,” the warning reads. “Parents and caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their back.”
Parents are asked to contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.saferproducts.gov to report safety issues with this or other products.
